Spanish tactician tipped to replace Riveiro in Orlando Pirates hot seat.
The Bucs could be gearing up for a major coaching change, and Spanish mentor Ferran Sibila is quickly rising to the top of the candidates’ list. With current head coach Jose Riveiro expected to leave at the end of the 2024/2025 season, sources close to the Soweto giants confirm that the club is actively exploring options for his replacement.
A source revealed that Sibila’s representatives have already made contact, signaling the coach’s interest in testing his tactical mettle in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Who Is Ferran Sibila? Coach with European pedigree
Sibila’s resume is nothing short of impressive. He launched his coaching career in Sweden, where he served as an assistant at GIF Sundsvall during the 2017–2018 seasons. He then joined IFK Goteborg, working as assistant coach from 2019 to 2021. Following the departure of head coach Poya Asbaghi in 2020, Sibila briefly stepped in as caretaker manager.
In 2021, the Spanish tactician, Sibila, transitioned to England, joining Barnsley FC in the EFL Championship as an assistant coach. His journey came full circle when he returned to Sweden in 2022, accepting a development coach role at Malmo FF, focusing on loan player progression.
By November 2023, Finnish giants HJK Helsinki appointed him associate head coach, pending completion of his UEFA Pro License. Sibila began that training with the Scottish FA in May 2024, and shortly after, took the reins at IFK Varnamo in Sweden’s Allsvenskan as head coach.
Why Sibila fits the Pirates vision
Sibila’s expertise in player development, tactical analysis, and success with European clubs aligns with the Pirates’ vision for long-term success. His track record includes contributing to IFK Goteborg’s 2019–20 Svenska Cupen victory, a testament to his ability to positively impact teams at the highest level.
As the Pirates weigh their coaching options, Sibila’s reputation for grooming talent and implementing progressive football philosophies makes him an appealing candidate.
Internal promotion vs. international expertise: Pirates at a crossroads
While Sibila’s name gains traction, internal developments suggest another possible direction for the club. Sources indicate that Orlando Pirates might be leaning toward promotion from within, with one name standing out, Paz, a trusted member of Riveiro’s technical staff.
“He (Paz) is very capable as a coach, that’s what I can tell you. And that’s why the coach went to fetch him from where he was,” a club insider said.
“He is part of the coach’s (Riveiro’s) success this season, and his work is recognised and appreciated.”
This internal backing highlights the club’s possible shift toward continuity. But the allure of a coach like Sibila, armed with European experience and a modern footballing approach, could tempt the Pirates to look abroad.
With Jose Riveiro’s departure on the horizon, Orlando Pirates face a pivotal decision. Will they choose familiarity and continuity with Paz, or bring in fresh European influence with Ferran Sibila?
The coming weeks will be crucial as the Soweto giants navigate their next chapter. And it’s one that could redefine their ambitions both locally and on the continental stage.
