4 January 2025 – South African match officials Akhona Makalima, Jelly Chavani and Abongile Tom will officiate in this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
The next edition of CHAN will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 1–28 February 2025 and Chavani has been appointed as referee, and both Tom and Makalima as Video Assistant Referees.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) National Referees Committee and the Referees Department congratulated the three officials for continuing to represent South Africa in various events.
South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan applauded the trio and said this was a great start to the new year. “I am pleased to congratulate our officials, may they have a great tournament along with the other officials that will be in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda,” said the SAFA President.
The arrival of the referees and assistant referees is scheduled for 25 January 2025 for pre-tournament logistical arrangements.
