Two arrested with R16 million in suspected stolen gold
Two men have appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court following their arrest for possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of unwrought gold worth an estimated R16 million.
Daniel Schubert (61) and Adriaan Petrus du Plessis (49) were nabbed after a Germiston-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit received a tip-off about a grey BMW traveling from the Free State to Gauteng, allegedly to sell the gold.
A multidisciplinary team, including the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime unit and the Gauteng SAPS Flying Squad, intercepted the vehicle on the R21. A search of the car revealed a bag containing 80 gold bars, each weighing 100 grams.
Neither suspect could produce documentation authorising their possession or transport of the gold, leading to their immediate arrest.
Both men have been remanded in custody and are expected to return to court on 22 May 2025 for a formal bail application.
