South Africa Expresses Deep Concern Over Renewed Red Sea Attacks, Urges Restraint and Dialogue
The South African Government has expressed serious concern regarding the renewed escalation of attacks in the Red Sea region, specifically targeting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In an official statement released by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on Thursday, South Africa condemned the ongoing hostilities, emphasizing their destabilising impact on the protracted conflict in Yemen and the broader region.
South Africa strongly condemned all actions threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia and its neighbouring states.
The government voiced sharp criticism against any attacks directed at civilians and civilian infrastructure, citing them as direct violations of international law.
The statement also expressed profound concern over recent attacks on places of worship and sites of religious significance, including areas near the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
DIRCO noted that these acts undermine cultural heritage and religious freedom, reminding all parties that such sites hold immense significance for millions of Muslims globally and must be protected under international humanitarian law.
Highlighting the economic and logistical importance of the region, South Africa reaffirmed the necessity of safeguarding navigational rights, freedom of vessels, and the safety of seafarers in the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Strait of Hormuz.
The government stressed that maritime operations must strictly align with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Aligning with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, South Africa stated that the suffering of the Yemeni people can only be resolved through inclusive political dialogue and UN-sponsored negotiations.
The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, reiterated South Africa’s firm stance on resolving conflicts peacefully through constructive engagement and diplomacy.
“Sustainable peace in Yemen and stability in the Red Sea region remain essential for regional prosperity, international trade, and the advancement of Africa’s development agenda,” Lamola emphasized, urging all factions to exercise maximum restraint.
