Today, our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to Mosiuoa Patrick “Terror” Lekota (1948–2026), one of the bravest sons of the soil. From his days as a young activist facing the brutality of apartheid spending years on Robben Island alongside legends like Nelson Mandela to becoming Free State Premier, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, and our Minister of Defence, he poured his life into building the South Africa we all dream of.
Even when he took the bold step to co-found COPE, he did it because he believed deeply in principles, accountability, and a better politics for everyone. Through every chapter, struggle, government, opposition, he remained a dedicated public servant, outspoken, principled, and always putting the country first.
His voice, his courage, and his unwavering commitment to democracy and justice will echo in our history books and in our hearts for generations. South Africa is better because of him.
Rest in perfect peace, Ntate Lekota. Thank you for everything you’ve given us. You’ll never be forgotten.
Our thoughts and love are with his family, his comrades in COPE, and everyone who knew and loved him during this painful time.
