Snow starts Wednesday afternoon
GETTING READY TO TRAVEL. WHAT’S GOING ON RIGHT NOW, JASON? YEAH, SO RIGHT NOW WE’VE GOT QUIET CONDITIONS OUT THERE. YOU LOOK UP AT ALGONA, STILL A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW ON THE ROADS THERE FROM PREVIOUS SNOWS THAT WE’VE HAD. IT IS COLD, THOUGH, TWO BELOW. THAT FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURE IS AT 16 BELOW. SO THE CRAZY COLD ALREADY HERE FOR A LOT OF US. THE SNOW NOT QUITE YET. YOU CAN SEE A FEW SNOW SHOWERS UP IN THE NORTHWESTERN PORTION OF THE STATE. OTHERWISE, IT’S GOING TO TAKE US A LITTLE BIT TO BUILD THAT IN AS WE HEAD THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WE ARE OVERCAST FOR MANY OF US, THOUGH. AND AS WE ZOOM OUT HERE, WELL, THINGS ARE GOING TO GO FROM OKAY TO PRETTY BAD PRETTY QUICKLY HERE. WE’VE ACTUALLY GOT A BLIZZARD THAT’S IN EFFECT UPWARDS THROUGH MINNESOTA. THEY HAVE GOT A WIND CHILL WARNINGS AND WIND CHILL WATCHES AFTER THE WEST AS WELL. AND YOU CAN SEE MUCH OF IOWA UNDER A WINTER STORM WARNING THAT STARTS AT 6 P.M. TONIGHT. AND EVEN THOUGH THAT’S THE START TIME, WE WILL LIKELY BE TALKING SNOW FALLING THROUGH NORTHWESTERN PORTION AND NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE QUITE A BIT EARLIER THAN THAT. AND THIS WINTER STORM WARNING ENDS AT 6 A.M. ON SATURDAY. SO OUR WIND SPEEDS RIGHT NOW NOT BAD. AND AGAIN, FOR A LOT OF TODAY, THOSE WIND SPEEDS WON’T BE BAD. WE LIKELY WON’T BE SEEING THAT DRIFTING SNOW TODAY, BUT WE’LL DEFINITELY SEE THAT FALLING. AND THAT’S GOING TO MAKE FOR SOME DIFFICULT TRAVEL CONDITIONS LATER ON THIS AFTERNOON. WIND CHILLS ALREADY FRIGID. WHAT, 18 BELOW FOR MASON CITY, 16 BELOW UP IN ALGONA. THAT 12 HOUR FORECAST WILL WARM UP. WE’RE BACK INTO THE UPPER TEENS TO LOW TWENTIES THIS AFTERNOON, BUT THAT COMES WITH THAT CHANCE FOR SNOW. AND AS YOU CAN SEE IN YOUR 12 HOUR FORECAST OUT HERE, ALEX, TO START AROUND TWO OR 3 P.M. IN THE METRO. SO IF YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF TOWN FOR YOUR TRAVEL PLANS, YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO GET OUT OF TOWN BEFORE THAT, ESPECIALLY IF THOSE PLANS TAKE YOU NORTH OR WEST. LET’S TRACK OUT THE SNOW FOR YOU HERE. 6 A.M. GOT A LITTLE BIT OF THAT SNOW TO NORTHWEST BY 2 P.M. WE’VE GOT IT ACROSS THE WESTERN HALF OF THE STATE. SO WE WANT TO TAKE NOTE. THIS IS JUST A TAD EARLIER THAN WE WERE LOOKING AT YESTERDAY. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT SNOW CONTINUES TO MARCH ITS WAY EASTWARD BY 8 P.M. WE’RE PRETTY MUCH COVERED IN IT AND IT’S GOING TO TO RACE ITS WAY EASTWARD ACROSS THE STATE. EARLY MORNING HOURS STILL DEALING WITH SOME SNOW, MAINLY CENTRAL AND SOUTHEASTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. WATCH THE WINDS BRIGHT AND EARLY ON THURSDAY. WE’RE TALKING GUSTS TO 35 MILES AN HOUR AND WE’LL LIKELY SEE THAT INCREASE A BIT THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON. SO EVEN THOUGH WE’RE NOT SEEING THE SNOW FALL ON THURSDAY OR EVEN FRIDAY FOR THAT MATTER, WITH THE STRENGTH OF THE WINDS, IT’S GOING TO BE BLOWING ALL THAT SNOW AROUND AND MAKE FOR SOME VERY DIFFICULT CONDITIONS. SO IF YOUR TRAVEL PLANS PUT YOU ON THE ROAD THURSDAY OR FRIDAY, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A VERY DIFFICULT PATH FOR YOU AND AT TIMES POTENTIALLY IMPASSABLE NORTHEASTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE LIKELY TO PICK UP THE MOST, I’D SAY MAYBE 7 TO 8 INCHES OUT OF THAT. OTHERWISE 3 TO 6 INCHES ACROSS A BROAD AREA OF THE STATE. AND AGAIN, WITH THE WINDS THAT WILL HAVE FOR MULTIPLE DAYS HERE, GOING TO LEAD TO SOME VERY DIFFICULT TRAVEL, THOSE TEMPERATURES BAC
