ZWELITSHA – Over the past week the Eastern Cape police together with other external stakeholders embarked on Operation Shanela with the aim of sweeping away crime through high-density operations and ensure the safety of all citizens As it is the mandate of SAPS to combat crime and investigate any crimes which may threaten the security of any community, police swept off more than 60 unlicensed firearm from the streets and netted 678 suspects in the province. These suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, carjacking, assault with the intent to cause grevious bodily harm to dealing and possession of drug. Seizures on the operation include:
Police partook on foot patrols, stop and search, and intensify high visibility in CBD and rural areas as the crime prevention strategy. A number of 59 684 actions were executed from the eight district in the province with the assistance of police members, SANDF, Metro Police, Traffic Officials, Law Enforcement, Department of Home Affairs and Social Development as well as Department Correctional Services. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene appreciated the collaboration with other stakeholders with the aim of reducing crime in our policing precincts.
