On 17 May 2024 at about 11:10, police and local security were made aware of suspects trying to break in at a house in Fichardtpark, Bloemfontein. Local security companies reacted and the suspect’s vehicle, a Champaigne-colored Chevrolet bakkie, was spotted driving to Hamilton. The suspects jumped out of the vehicle, running in different directions. Members of the Bloemfontein Flying Squad, working together with private security and community patrolers, apprehended the two suspects The two, aged 39 and 42, were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and possession of housebreaking implements On 16 May 2024 at about 15:10, the SAPS Airport Commander at Braam Fischer International Airport, Bloemfontein, received information from a vehicle rental company housed at the airport about a vehicle used without the owner’s consent. It is alleged that a blue Renault vehicle was supposed to have been returned to the rental place on 13 May 2024, but the driver never pitched up. The vehicle was traced and spotted in Zeerust, in the North West Province, through the E2 project. Further investigation revealed that the person who rented the vehicle was previously involved in a case of unlawful possession of firearms. Zeerust K9 unit members reacted to the information, and the vehicle was located and found with four suspects. While searching the vehicle, different bankcards and a possible card-scamming device were discovered and four males, aged between 29 and 32, were arrested for fraud and card-scamming. Investigations are underway to link the same suspects to more fraud cases reported in the Free State.
The suspects will appear in different magistrate courts on the above charges. Investigations continue.
