Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – The Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya expressed his enchantment and lauded the swift fruitful joint effort by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks in joint efforts with Gqeberha Public Order Police (POP),Tactical Response Team, Motherwell Visible Policing, Kwazakhele Visible Policing, National Intervention Unit (NIU), Gqeberha Crime Combating Unit (CCU), Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Explosive Unit, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Swartkops Visible Policing and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan District Office members apprehended Cash-In-Transit robbery suspects within few minutes of the incident on 9 December 2024. It is alleged that on 9 December 2024 around 16:20, the G4S armoured vehicle (AV) from Sasol garage en-route to Kwazakhele was ambushed on the M17 near Motherwell, by a number of suspects in two white bakkies. Through hail of bullets the AV was brought to a standstill and explosives were reportedly used to access cash. An undisclosed amount of money was taken by the suspects. It is further alleged that three guards were injured during the attack as they sustained bullet wounds. A multi-disciplinary team was activated to attend CIT robbery scene. On their way to the scene, the team was reportedly confronted by another assailants’ vehicle with a hail of bullets and a shootout ensued wherein the suspects fled towards Kwazakhele. Further reports indicated that the accused alighted from the bakkie while shooting at the police and hijacked an Audi A1, then fled. Few metres away, the suspects are said to have jumped off from the Audi and fled on foot. The team apprehend six (6) suspects aged between 28 and 42, four (4) of whom sustained injuries. During the arrest, the team recovered five (5) rifles, two (2) pistols, few G4S original money bags with cash, gloves and balaclavas from the suspects. An intelligence information was received while processing the scene about the second bakkie where it was found abandoned at Soweto Township in Gqeberha.
The six (6) suspects are expected to make their first court appearance before Motherwell Magistrates court on Wednesday, 11 December 2024.
