Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – A collaborative effort by Mahikeng Visible Policing members including Reservists and working together with the local Community Police Forum (CPF) apprehended two suspects for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. The team was performing Safer Festive Season Operation patrol duties on Friday night, 29 November 2024, when they spotted two suspicious males along Station Road, Mahikeng. The pair ran away when the team approached them however, they were swiftly apprehended. Upon searching the duo, a 9mm Glock Pistol loaded with five live rounds of ammunition was found inside one of the males’ bags. They failed to give account for the possession and were both taken to the police station for questioning. Subsequent to the circulation of the firearm, it was established that the firearm belongs to one of the two security officers who were found dead on Sunday, 17 November 2024, near Danville, Mahikeng. Following investigation that was continued at the pair’s rented rooms in town, six rounds of ammunition and a holster were found. Both males, who previously worked with the murdered security officers, were placed under arrest. The accused; Zithembe Zondi (27) and Sthembiso Zondi (43), appeared before the Molopo Regional Court in Mmabatho on Monday, 02 December 2024. They were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on Wednesday, 04 December 2024. Investigation into the matter continues. The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena thanked the team members for their vigilance and cooperation, which led to the arrest and recoveries. He said further that the success came due to excellent police community relations and the Reservists who displayed the will to serve our communities. Ends
