Shebe Maburna Trial Postponed to May 2027
POLOKWANE: The trial of Limpopo musician Lehlohonolo “Shebe Maburna” Chauke has been postponed to May 2027 following a pre-trial conference at the Polokwane Regional Court.
The matter was postponed to 17–21 May 2027, with the State indicating that it intends to call 22 witnesses during the trial.
Chauke is facing 21 charges, including four counts of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, common assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving, and culpable homicide.
During the pre-trial proceedings, Chauke’s newly appointed defence team indicated that it would only confirm the number of witnesses it intends to call after having an opportunity to familiarise itself fully with the State’s case.
The defence also indicated that it would provide the court with an outline of its defence once it had completed its preparations.
In addition, the defence plans to pursue several applications, including a fresh bail application based on new facts and representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The defence further indicated that it intends to bring an application seeking the recusal of the presiding judicial officer, Ms Felleng Ntilane, on allegations of bias.
The allegation of bias has not been determined by the court. Ntilane remains seized with the matter pending the outcome of any formal recusal application.
The postponement gives both the State and defence further time to prepare for the trial, which is expected to involve a substantial number of witnesses and multiple serious charges against Chauke.
