Shalulile likens himself to Portugal star Ronaldo
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has likened himself to world famous star Cristiano Ronaldo.
He says his move to Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC is similar to Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid for Juventus.
The Namibia international recently completed a high-profile switch to Yanga, where he has reunited with former Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi in Dar es Salaam.
Shalulile ended a remarkable six-year spell at Sundowns, where he became the Premier Soccer League’s all-time leading goalscorer after joining from Highlands Park in 2020.
Before signing for Yanga, the 32-year-old had attracted interest from several African clubs, including Zimbabwean side Scottland FC.
Speaking at his unveiling, Shalulile dismissed claims that moving to Tanzania was a step down.
“Leaving South Africa and coming to Tanzania is like Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid and going to Juventus,” he said.
“There is no poor league. I know what I have chosen. This is a competitive league, and I have been watching it closely. Many top players have come from this country.”
Shalulile also refused to guarantee CAF Champions League success despite Yanga’s growing ambitions.
“It’s a team sport. I can’t promise we will win it,” he said.
“But the players have positive energy and share one dream of reaching the CAF Champions League final. Sometimes you fail, learn and eventually succeed. That’s how you win the Champions League.”
