Severe weather warnings remain in force as cold, wet conditions hit SA
South Africa is experiencing a cold, wet and unsettled Friday, with showers, thundershowers, and several severe-weather warnings still in place.
The most serious alert is an Orange Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms over the east-central Northern Cape. Heavy rain could flood settlements, roads, and bridges, with hail, strong winds, falling trees, and lightning also expected.
Yellow Level 4 thunderstorm warnings cover the central and eastern Northern Cape, western Free State, extreme western North West, and southern KwaZulu-Natal. Separate Yellow Level 4 alerts are out for damaging winds across parts of the Northern and Western Cape and most of KZN, and for dangerous wind and waves from Alexander Bay to Plettenberg Bay and along the KZN coast. Winds in KZN could reach about 90 km/h.
A Yellow Level 2 thunderstorm warning applies to the eastern Free State, parts of North West, southern Gauteng, and south-western Mpumalanga. Very cold, wet, and windy conditions are also possible in Namakwa, the Western Cape interior, and parts of the Eastern Cape.
Motorists should treat wet roads and crosswinds with caution. Stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid flooded crossings.
