Media Statement POLOKWANE – The SAPS Sekhukhune District Commissioner Major General Junior Lehabe-Metse supported the safety awareness campaign held in conjunction with the University of Limpopo. The successful event was held on Tuesday, 14 May 2024 at the main campus in Mankweng, attended by hundreds of students. The main objective of the event was to address the scourge of GBVF and other crimes affecting the university community. In attendance were also the SAPS Mankweng Station Commander Brigadier Jonathan Mathabatha, Deputy Provincial champion for Women’s Network Colonel Baratang Maja, Deputy Provincial champion for Men for Change Warrant Officer Moses Molepo, and Provincial Social Crime Prevention co-ordinator Lieutenant Colonel Mokame. SRC President Khutso Mamabolo urged collaboration between Police and the university, saying together we can do more. He said we cannot win the battle against crime working in silos. Community organisation known as Motswikitswiki was represented by Pitsi Sehlapelo, who also echoed other speakers that we must work together to defeat crime in our areas. He urged students to stay away from drugs to avoid criminal records or dropping out of university. Brigadier Mathabatha highlighted the importance of community solidarity in tackling GBV related incidents. He assured students that Police visibility will be heightened in all corners of Mankweng policing precinct. As he concluded, he urged the community to join hands with the police to root out criminal elements within the society. Major General Junior Lehabe-Metsi speaking on behalf of the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe delivered a stirring address to the applaud of students. Attendees were encouraged to break the silence on gender-based violence and domestic related crimes. She stressed that Police officers are human beings before their profession, meaning they are directly affected by crime. Major General Lehabe-Metsi further alluded that crime has become the biggest threat to our freedom and rights and a danger to national security and sovereignty. ” The social fabric of our society is slowly being eroded due to criminality. Hence, we must mobilise the community to assist Police to fight crime.” She concluded by discouraging students not to consume liquor in public and refrain from taking drugs. The SAPS members appreciated the warm reception they received from the Director for safety at the University of Limpopo on behalf of the university, who promised to work with Police at all material times to curb crime. He then pleaded with SAPS management to launch Community Policing Forum at the university urgently. Promotional materials containing information about the prevention of various crimes, including GBVF, were distributed to the attendees.
