Andre Onana’s recent performances have come under fire from Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, who didn’t hold back in his assessment after the team’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon.
Speaking after the match, Schmeichel expressed growing concern about United’s fragile defence, saying that Onana’s inconsistencies in goal make it hard to feel secure, even when the team is leading. “You never feel safe,” he said. “Even at 2-1 up, you’re always fearing the other team will claw their way back.”
Onana’s errors during the match against Lyon drew particular criticism. Regarding the first goal, Schmeichel pointed out that although players ran across Onana’s line of sight, the goalkeeper should have managed the shot better. The second goal was a straightforward save, according to Schmeichel, but Onana failed to keep it out.
While Onana was in the spotlight, the scrutiny came alongside an unrelated clash involving former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who had made controversial remarks about the club. Schmeichel defended Matic, suggesting his words may have come out wrong in the heat of the moment, but highlighted that it was likely driven by a deep care for the club.
Still, Schmeichel was careful not to place all the blame on Onana, acknowledging wider issues across the team. “Is he the problem? The defence? The midfield?” he questioned. “There’s a lot that needs fixing.”
United’s management has remained quiet regarding Onana’s form, though manager Ruben Amorim posted on social media praising the team’s resilience and focus on improvement. Onana himself responded defiantly, stating, “Head up, we keep pushing forward.”
Despite the draw, United remains in contention in the Europa League, but Schmeichel’s words echo the concerns of many fans. As summer approaches, the pressure is on Amorim to address the instability and restore confidence in the squad.
