Media Statement ZWELITSHA – The participation of SAPS members from the Joe Gqabi and Alfred Ndzo Districts in the SARPCCO operation “Thaba Basiu” yielded significant successes over the period from 09 until 13 December 2024. Operation Thaba Basiu is an undertaking initiative among Southern African Development Community and East-African countries with the objectives of the operation in eradicating of Human Trafficking – smuggling of migrants and prevention of Cross-border crimes such as smuggling of contraband goods, firearms and illicit drugs. The execution of Usalama objectives is strengthened by the ongoing Operation Shanela with the aim to combat and prevent crime in our policing precincts. Members from various units of the South African Police Service and SANDF embarked on the operation and intensified patrols with high visibility in hotspot areas within the two districts. The focus areas included checking of stolen vehicles, transportation of stock, possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms, unroadworthy vehicles and drunken driving. Police conducted roadblocks with the assistance of Traffic Officers and 115 traffic fines were issued to the value of R 104 950 -00. They also visited liquor outlets for compliance and 156 755 ml of liquor was confiscated. The tracing teams also arrested wanted suspects for crimes ranging from assault to business robbery. The following notable successes were achieved during the operations: Notices were issued to businesses and 1 407 counterfeit goods, including cigarettes and Illicit pharmaceutical products were confiscated. One gambling machine was confiscated, and a fine was issued for contravention of the Gambling At. 19 fines were issued for contravention of the animal identification act 36 undocumented persons were arrested for contravention of the immigration act. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of drugs 13 whoonga capsules, one boss tablet and three zip lock bags containing tik. A 55-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm (revolver) and ammunition. All these suspects will appear at different Magistrate courts within the two districts soon. The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, extended her gratitude to the units and external role players for their outstanding dedication and commitment in combating crime in the Eastern Cape. “The teamwork and tireless efforts were instrumental in ensuring safety in our societies and the successes on the operation,” she concluded.
