SAQA Does Not Recognise Bishop Maumela’s “Dr” Title
Questions have been raised over Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela’s use of the academic title “Dr” after the government-linked Justice, Crime Prevention and Security account, said he does not hold a doctorate registered or recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
In a post today, Thursday, the account said Maumela had no doctorate registered or recognised by SAQA from a recognised South African or foreign university. It said referring to him as “Dr” was therefore “not academically justified” and later described the use of the title as “misrepresentation.”
The claim comes after Maumela attracted widespread attention for defending suspended SAPS Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya following his arrest.
Maumela said he was with Sibiya at a Sandton establishment on Monday when police arrested the suspended senior officer. Sibiya faces charges including rape, trafficking in persons and the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl.
Speaking outside the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Maumela described Sibiya’s arrest as part of what he alleged was an internal succession battle within the SAPS. He also warned of possible “retaliation” if President Cyril Ramaphosa did not intervene.
Maumela later withdrew the remarks and apologised, saying he should have exercised greater restraint, particularly because the criminal case involves allegations concerning a minor. He also said he would refrain from making further public comments on the matter.
Maumela has been referred to as “Dr” by some media outlets, including in coverage of his comments on Sibiya’s arrest.
As of Thursday evening, Maumela had not publicly responded to the claim concerning his academic qualifications.
