Media Statement GQEBERHA – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kariega is appealing to the public for assistance in combating a growing trend of stock theft that is severely impacting local farmers. The rise in these crimes has not only resulted in financial losses but also raised concerns about the safety and security of livestock in the Nelson Mandela Bay District. Since November 2024, the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit has seen an increase in cattle being stolen and slaughtered across the Nelson Mandela Bay District, with incidents reported in areas such as Kabega Park, Despatch, and Kariega. Criminals are targeting livestock, often butchering the animals on-site, and leaving farmers with devastating losses. In a recent case, a farmer in Mimosadale, Rooihoogte (Kariega) kraaled his eight cows on Monday, 10 February, at approximately 17:00. The following morning, he returned to find the kraal empty. After searching the area, he discovered that three of his cows had been slaughtered, a fourth was severely injured, and the remaining four were later recovered. SAPS is urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Warrant Officer Mario Van Der Westhuizen at 079 896 7363 / 041 994 9653 (office hours) or Detective Warrant Officer Yvette Browers at 082 414 1951. Alternatively, anonymous tip-offs can be reported via Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS App. All information will be treated confidentially, and callers may remain anonymous. Ends
