Media Statement MPUMALANGA – The SAPS will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to women and men in blue who died in the line of duty between April 2023 to March 2024. As a build up to the National Commemoration Day that will be held at the Unions Buildings on 01 September 2024, the SAPS will honour 39 members who died during this period. Today, we pay tribute and honour our fallen hero, the late Sergeant Simon Mbonani who died on 03 April 2023. The 43-year-old member was attached to the Middelburg police station in Mpumalanga as a detective. He had 15 years’ service at the time of his passing. On 03 April 2023, the member was part of a team that spotted a truck fitted with a diesel tank carrying suspected stolen diesel on the R555 Stofberg Road in Mpumalanga. The team managed to stop the truck but as they approached it, they came under fire from suspects. Sergeant Mbonani was fatally shot and his crew sustained gunshot wounds. On the same day, police traced and arrested four suspects who were linked to the murder of Sergeant Mbonani. The team also recovered firearms on the scene. The suspects have already appeared at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of murder, two counts of attempted murder and diesel theft charges. Their case has been transferred to the Mpumalanga High Court for trial. He leaves behind his wife and two children of which the youngest one was a year old at the time of his death. To Sergeant Mbonani, your name will be engraved on the SAPS’s National memorial wall at the Union Buildings to eternalise your unforgettable memory and signify the gratitude of the nation for your bravery, loyalty and the sacrifices you made to serve and protect the people of South Africa. May your soul continue to Rest IN PEACE Ends
