PRETORIA – SAPS members deployed at the Vala Umgodi Mission Area Joint Operation Centre (MAJOC) situated at Mob Support in Pretoria West, awarded with medals and trophies for their outstanding contributions and achievements in the fight against illegal mining in the country. The glamorous awarding ceremony was held at the Hotel 224 in Pretoria, on Friday, 14 February 2025, to recognise individual contributions and professionalism towards the success of Operation Vala Umgodi in preventing, combatting and investigating illegal mining activities across the country. These members were deployed at the MAJOC for the period of three months, starting December 2024 to February 2025.MAJOC oversees the administrative command, managing logistics, communication coordination, resource allocation, and compliance to support effective mission execution. Moreover, members have ensured the centre provides support and capacitate the Tactical Joint Operational Centres (TACJOC) in the provinces and roving teams across the country to prevent and combat illegal mining activities including to execute takedown operations. MAJOC Commander, Brigadier George Mokwena stressed that these awards celebrate the unwavering dedication and hard work of these members who go beyond the call of duty to ensure that the MAJOC is effective and well-coordinated in a professional manner. “On behalf of the SAPS, I would like to salute you for remarkable achievements and contributions in the past three months of your deployment that reflects you dedication and unwavering commitment in the fight against illegal mining activities in the country. As you will be finishing your deployment this month-end to be with your loved ones, colleagues and families, thank you very much for contributions and may God bless you as you continue to serve our country,” he said Operation Vala Umgodi since its inception in December 2023 led to the arrest of more than 18 000 suspects. 458 illegal firearms, 12 000 rounds of ammunition, 283 trucks, 303 vehicles and as well as 84 big machinery have been seized during operations across the country. Over R5 million in cash and uncut diamonds worth R32 million have also been seized. End
