Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, lauded the efforts of the investigating officer and the prosecution team who all contributed to the hefty sentencing handed down on Wednesday 24 April 2024 in the Western Cape High Court. Judge Michelle Adams incarcerated 27-year-old Keagan Samuels to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for his involvement in the murder of a 93-year-old woman. Reports suggested that Keagan Samuels went to his family home in Dammert Street, Bellville South, on 01 August 2021 where he found his 10-year-old brother and his step great grandmother at home. The elderly woman requested some assistance which eventually frustrated the suspect to the extent that he brutally assaulted the victim and ultimately strangled her, after which he fled the scene. The investigating officer assigned to the case, Sergeant Faizel Hercules, and a team of seasoned detectives, pursued all the relevant information at their disposal and vowed to ensure a break through. The tenacity of the investigating team resulted in the arrest of the 25-year-old male, on 03 August 2021 on a charge of murder. The detention of the suspect paved the way for a lengthy trial. During court proceedings the investigating officer faced the gruelling onslaught from the defence lawyer. However he made a decision not to duck and dive the questions posed at him for a response. He calmly stated the facts as contained in the case docket and presented it to the honourable court. Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile wished Detective Sergeant Faizel Hercules and his team well with their future endeavours to bring the perpetrators of the justice to book. Ends
