Media Statement
GAUTENG – The South African Police Service (SAPS) will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to women and men in blue who died in the line of duty between April 2023 to March 2024. As a build up to the National Commemoration Day that will be held at the Union Buildings on 01 September 2024, the SAPS will honour 39 members who died during this period. Today, we pay tribute and honour to our fallen hero, the late Constable Senzo Sibusiso Ncala who died on 10 May 2023. The thirty-one-year-old member was attached to Honeydew police station in Gauteng as a detective and had six years’ service in the organisation at the time of his passing. On 10 May 2023, the member and his colleague, Sergeant Lincorn Shikwambana were following up on information they obtained on a suspect alleged to be dealing in explosives intended for illicit mining activities in the area of Roodepoort. The members were ambushed by unknown suspects who fired multiple gun shots at them. Constable Ncala and his colleague were fatally wounded whereafter the suspects fled the scene with the members’ belongings, including their state firearms and a police vehicle. No stone will be left unturned to trace and arrest the perpetrators, investigation still continues. He leaves behind two children, the youngest being one-year-old at the time of his father’s passing. To Constable Ncala, the SAPS flag does not fly because the wind blows it, it flies with the last breath of every police officer who died defending it. May your soul continue to rest in eternal peace. Ends
