Media Statement
ATTERIDGEVILLE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to women and men in blue who died in the line of duty between April 2023 and March 2024. As a build up to the National Commemoration Day that will be held at the Union Buildings on 01 September 2024, the SAPS will honour 39 members who died during this period. Today, we pay tribute and honour to our fallen hero, the late Constable Katlego Arnold Lefaka who died on 08 May 2023. The twenty-nine-year-old member was attached to Atteridgeville police station and had four years’ service in the organisation at the time of his passing. On 08 May 2023 the member along with his crew responded to a house robbery in progress in Saulsville, Pretoria West. The member sustained gunshot wounds to his head when the intruders exchanged gun fire with the member and his crew; he later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Police arrested three suspects and recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition at the scene. The trio already appeared in court on charges of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition; the case is still court going. He leaves behind two children, the youngest being four-years-old at the time of his father’s passing. To Constable Lefaka, your name will be engraved on the SAPS’ National memorial wall at the Union Buildings to eternalise your unforgettable memory and signify the gratitude of the nation for your bravery, loyalty and the sacrifices you made to serve and protect the people of South Africa. May your soul continue to REST IN PEACE. Ends
