POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) Capricorn District held its annual Sports and Cooking Competition on Wednesday, 30 October 2024, at the Karee Base in Polokwane. This event serves as a precursor to the main Provincial Sports Day. The day’s activities featured various physical fitness challenges, sporting events, and a cooking competition aimed at promoting a culture of wellness among personnel. Recognizing the demands of police work, the initiative emphasizes the importance of mental and physical readiness in combating crime. Provincial Coordinator of GBVF and Vulnerable Group Colonel BG Maja led the event on behalf of District Commissioner Major General Lesiba Mashilo, alongside, Provincial management and Station Commanders. Participants engaged in fun runs of 5, 10, and 15 kilometers, aerobics sessions, and team sports such as netball and soccer. In her address, Colonel Maja emphasized the importance of prioritizing physical fitness for operational readiness. She highlighted the pressures faced by law enforcement officers and urged them to prioritize their health and resilience. “I am honored to address you today during this vibrant competition. As we gather to promote camaraderie, teamwork, and healthy living, remember that your well-being is crucial for excellence in your duties. Embracing a healthy lifestyle can enhance energy, focus, and overall performance,” she stated.
Colonel Maja also stressed the significance of mental health, encouraging officers to seek support when needed and reminding them that seeking help is a sign of strength. Warrant Officer (Chaplain) Mokoena from Provincial Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) opened and closed the event with prayer, contributing to the coordination of the day’s activities.
