MAKHANDA – The SAPS Sarah Baartman District hosted a farewell function in honour of the Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka who is retiring at the end of February 2025 after a stellar career of 37 years. The prestigious event was hosted at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Makhanda on Friday, 21 February 2025. Amongst the attendees were the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Honorable Mr Xolile Nqatha, the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General NL Mene, the Sarah Baartman District Executive Mayor Deon De Vos, Eastern Cape SAPS senior Managers and other distinguished guests. The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General NL Mene, handed over a service certificate to the retiring Major General as acknowledgment of the 37 years of service to the South African Police Service. Lieutenant General Mene congratulated Major General Xawuka and wished him well on his retirement before the Keynote address speaker was called to the stage. In his introduction to the keynote address, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Honorable Mr Xolile Nqatha, described the Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka, as energetic, vibrant, practical, and a man of his word. He further emphasized that Major General Xawuka ensures the SAPS is present in areas facing challenges and concerns. To reinforce his point, he added: “If the issue, such as ‘gangsterism in Humansdorp’ is identified, he will immediately hold management meetings at the affected school. And if he says ‘it is going to happen,’ you can be certain that it will,” uttered the MEC. Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Cape Government, the MEC addressed Major General Zolani directly and said that the government is extremely proud of the remarkable career and the meaningful impact he made in the Province and the community at large. The MEC furthermore stated that the government is grateful for his 37 years contribution of service to the people and for stamping down the authority of the state with his stellar leadership style. The District Commissioner’s family, honored as distinguished guests, attended the prestigious event and were treated as VVIPs by everyone present. In his reply, the Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Zolani Xawuka thanked everyone and appreciated the efforts for making his farewell function a success and a memorable event. While sharing his career path and some pleasurable snippets and memories from his 37 years in the SAPS, he acknowledged the presence of the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Honorable Mr Xolile Nqatha, the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General NL Mene, his family, and attendees present. “This is indeed a day I will forever cherish and remember, as I hang my boots,” concluded the soon to retire Major General.
