WESTERN CAPE – An extensive investigation into the fraudulent issuing of firearm competency certificates led to the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect in Khayelitsha this morning. The arrest was made during an integrated operation conducted by Provincial Organised Crime detectives. The suspect is linked to multiple case dockets across several areas, including Elsies River, Cape Town, and Lansdowne in the Western Cape, as well as Tarkastad in the Northern Cape and Beacon Bay in the Eastern Cape. The investigation, initiated in August 2024, uncovered that after registering a company in November 2023, the suspect obtained fraudulent proficiency certificates from legitimate training providers accredited by the South African Professional Firearms Trainers Council. Several firearm training providers reported that their institutions were exploited to issue counterfeit competency certificates. Further inquiries revealed that the suspect assisted taxi owners, taxi drivers, and individuals working or seeking employment in the security industry in obtaining SAPS competency certificates and subsequent firearm licences. The investigation also indicates that the suspect collaborated with SAPS officers at the Central Firearms Registry to secure firearm licences using the fraudulent documentation. This suspect remains under investigation. Ends
