FREE STATE – A multi disciplinary operation was conducted at Bizza Makhate Correctional Centre where electronics and foreign objects were found and confiscated. On Tuesday 02 April 2024 at about 10:00 a joint Interdepartmental operation was held by Members of the South African Police Service Welkom, Anti Gang Unit (A.G.U) and Correctional Service’s Emergency Support Team (E.S.T) from Groenpunt, Grootvlei and Kroonstad. The mandate of the operation was to confiscate contrabands. A search was conducted at the targeted Sections of awaiting trial prisoners and the following contrabands were found and confiscated in the cells searched. Scissors, cellphones, simcards, drugs, money, sharp objects and bank cards. Still on the same day while the Members were busy detaining the arrested Suspect, assistance was requested from the Members in the Maokeng precinct area where members of the community had caught a suspected robber. AGU Members again quickly rushed to the scene and upon arrival found one African Male being assaulted by a group of community members and the team managed to rescue him.
Upon investigation, it was alleged that the suspect and his 2 accomplices (who managed to flee) had robbed an elderly person of cash and a cellphone. The elderly person was located by the members and taken to Maokeng SAPS where he was assisted to open a case and the suspect was detained for robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.
