MPUMALANGA – On Friday, 10 January 2025, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Air Wing in support of the Search and Rescue Unit successfully led a rescue operation to save a 19-year-old woman trapped in the Nkomazi River in Tonga, Mpumalanga, following severe flooding. The Mpumalanga province has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to dangerously high water levels. The young woman had attempted to cross the river using a bridge but was swept away by strong river currents. Fortunately, she managed to hold onto a reed in the middle of the river until rescue teams arrived. The SAPS Air Wing crew and SAPS Search and Rescue Unit were also joined by Disaster Management, Emergency Services, and other role players. The woman was safely hoisted out of the river, bringing the operation to a successful conclusion. Safety Tips During Heavy Rains and Flooding: * Keep an eye on rising water levels. * Identify high ground and move to safety immediately if water levels rise. * Never attempt to walk, swim, play, or drive through floodwaters, as they may conceal strong currents or hidden dangers. * Avoid camping near streams or in low-lying areas prone to flooding. * Monitor weather forecasts and avoid streams if thunderstorms are predicted or have occurred nearby. * Stay alert for rapidly changing conditions when thunderstorms are in the area. * Remember, even shallow water (as little as 15 cm) moving swiftly can knock you off your feet. STAY VIGILANT, STAY SAFE! Ends
