Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – The Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela continues to bring alleged perpetrators to book as we enter the start of holiday season. This after police in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and role players arrested 880 suspects during enhanced crime prevention and combatting operations conducted between Monday, 25 November and Sunday, 01 December 2024. The suspects were among others, arrested for various crimes such as carjacking, murder, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, burglaries at business and residential premises, driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. As part of enforcement of the Immigration Act, 2002, 11 suspected undocumented foreign nationals were taken in for processing. Of the total arrests, 517 were effected during detectives suspect raiding operations, which focused on wanted and circulated suspects. During the operations, 89 premises, 2 906 persons and 1 117 vehicles were searched. In addition, 107 compliance inspections were conducted at licenced liquor premises while 26 illegal liquor outlets were shutdown. The following items were confiscated: Liquor, 79 ammunition, a variety of drugs, 16 cell phones, two firearms, four vehicles and precious metals. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena reiterated that nothing will deter law enforcement agencies from enforcing the law to ensure the safety and security of our communities.
