Gift Links has opened up on his long absence from Bafana Bafana — admitting he has been left completely “in the dark”.
The Aarhus GF winger has not been selected since 2021, despite consistently impressing in the Danish Superliga.
Now, the 27-year-old says the most frustrating part is the silence.
“I have never received any explanation. I was there in 2021, and then I left, and I never heard from anyone.
“So, that’s how it has been since,” Links said. “You know, of course, it’s difficult.”
Links has been in strong form in Europe, recently reaching 200 appearances for Aarhus and contributing goals and assists this season.
Yet, he remains overlooked by head coach Hugo Broos — even as calls grow for more overseas-based players in the national setup.
“It’s really difficult for me because if I did something and then I got no explanation, like, ‘Okay, this is what happened’.
“Then I would understand. But the thing is, I went for the national team camp in 2021, and I came back, and I have never been in the squad, even until today.
“I don’t know why, because no one has ever said anything to me. Maybe I did something wrong.”
Despite the snub, Links remains focused on his club career.
“All I can do is keep working hard… maybe one day things will change,” he added.
For now, one of South Africa’s most consistent exports remains on the outside looking in — with no answers as to why.
