Rulani Mokwena has reportedly officially resigned as coach of MC Alger. The South African tactician is now headed to Al Ittihad Tripoli in Libya.
His departure comes with a price tag. Rulani Mokwena must pay the Algerian giants two months’ salary as a penalty. This fee allows him to activate a clause for early contract termination.
Mokwena will reunite with star forward Thembinkosi Lorch in Tripoli. Lorch previously followed the coach to Wydad AC in Morocco from Memelodi Sundowns.
He originally wanted to join Mokwena in Algeria. However, league rules ban signing foreign players over age 29. The Libyan move finally makes their reunion possible.
The Libyan project looks incredibly ambitious. Talented Burkina Faso star Stephane Aziz Ki is also part of the plan. Rulani Mokwena has long admired the talented playmaker. Adding both Lorch and Aziz Ki would create a massive attacking threat.
This move signals a new chapter for the “Mokwena project” in North Africa.
Mokwena is betting on familiar faces to conquer Libya. Paying his own way out of Algiers shows his commitment to this new venture.
