South African coach Rhulani Mokwena has finally opened up about his sudden departure from MC Alger, revealing that the decision was far from easy but ultimately necessary.
Now appointed as the new head coach of Al-Ittihad SC, Mokwena addressed the controversy during an interview on Radio 947 with Robert Marawa, describing his exit as “very, very difficult”.
“It’s quite complicated. It was a very difficult decision, but we felt it was the right decision,” Mokwena said.
His departure raised eyebrows, especially as MC Alger was in a strong position to secure a historic third consecutive league title.

However, Mokwena made it clear that the timing was influenced by bigger ambitions beyond immediate success.
“The team is in a very good position. The president and the players are strong enough to see it through,” he explained.
The former coach hinted that the move was driven by a larger vision, including the opportunity to be part of a more expansive sporting project.
He revealed that one of his key motivations is to open doors for South African coaches on the international stage.
“We were presented with an opportunity to help South Africans explore opportunities abroad, whether in the first team, youth structures or women’s football,” he said.
Mokwena emphasised that the focus will be on empowering qualified and capable professionals, not just based on nationality but on merit and expertise.
The move marks a significant new chapter in his career, with ambitions that stretch beyond club success to broader development and influence in global football.
As he begins his journey with Al-Ittihad, Mokwena’s vision could reshape opportunities for South African coaches looking to break into international football.
