Media Statement WARDEN – The Harrismith Regional Court, together with the Vrede Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, successfully sentenced the accused person, Thabo Shadrack Mokoena (33), of Ezenzeleni near Warden to 15 years of direct imprisonment for raping a 39-year-old woman from the same township. On 30 October 2023 at about 00:30, the 39-year-old woman was on her way home from a local tavern when an accused approached her, proposing love, and she refused his request. The accused then took a knife out of his pocket, threatened to kill her, and forcefully took the victim with him to his place, where he raped her. He fell asleep, and the victim managed to escape, and she went to her two friends and reported the rape to them. They all went to Warden police station to report this matter. The accused was arrested and remained in custody.
On 17 May 2024, he was sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment by the magistrate, Mr Tshatsimpe, and the prosecutor, Mr Camphor. The matter was professionally and successfully investigated by Detective Warrant Officer December Twala of the Vrede Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit.
