POTCHEFSTROOM – The Rustenburg Regional Court, sentenced a 34-year-old Lesotho National to life imprisonment on Monday, 2 September 2024, for raping an 11-year-old girl in May 2022, at Sereleng New Stands in Boitekong, near Rustenburg. The girl was walking alone from the school when approached by the suspect who was a friend of a family member. The suspect instructed the little girl to go with him and they were seen walking together to the side of the informal settlement. A neighbour who saw the victim and the suspect walking together, reported this to the victim’s aunt who became suspicious and instructed her brother to go and search for the minor. The uncle and the neighbour went around the neighbourhood looking for the victim and the suspect. Reports state that, when they reached an unoccupied shack they found the suspect still raping the little girl and when the suspect saw them he ran away. The victim was taken to hospital and police were alerted about the incident. The suspect was traced and handed to the police by Seraleng community members on Thursday, 12 May 2022, and he has been behind bars ever since his arrest. It was also discovered during investigations that the accused started raping the minor in March 2022. The accused was further declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000). The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena and the Director for Public Prosecution, Dr Rachel Makhari thanked members of the community for their cooperation. In addition, they congratulated the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Mmathapelo Sebogodi and the prosecutor, Mr Aubrey Mataboge for their collaborative efforts and ensuring that no stone is left unturned to secure the conviction.
