President Cyril Ramaphosa began his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) by honoring 14 South African soldiers who tragically lost their lives while deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This solemn acknowledgment underscored the country’s commitment to regional peacekeeping and the sacrifices made by the nation’s armed forces.
Economic Recovery: Hope Amid Challenges
Ramaphosa pointed to a recovering economy, citing GDP growth and declining unemployment rates as signs of progress. However, he acknowledged persistent economic struggles, including inequality, poverty, and sluggish business growth.
The government’s continued investment in industrialisation, support for businesses and small enterprises, and expansion of the Presidential Employment Stimulus were presented as key strategies to sustain economic momentum.
Energy Crisis: Light at the End of the Tunnel?
Addressing one of South Africa’s most pressing issues, Ramaphosa reassured the public that significant strides had been made in stabilising Eskom. He credited independent power producers and increased renewable energy initiatives for helping to alleviate pressure on the grid.
While load shedding has not been fully eliminated, he emphasised that the worst was behind the nation, with further improvements expected in 2025.
Corruption and Governance: Accountability in Action
Ramaphosa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption, stating that the government has intensified efforts to hold officials accountable. He pointed to progress in implementing recommendations from the Zondo Commission, with key prosecutions underway. However, he acknowledged that restoring public trust in state institutions remains a challenge.
Foreign Policy: Global Alliances and Relations with the U.S.
In a striking segment of his speech, Ramaphosa touched on South Africa’s global standing, addressing recent tensions with the United States. He acknowledged the impact of shifting U.S. policies, including Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, and its implications for South Africa’s trade and diplomatic relations.
However, he reassured citizens that South Africa remains committed to maintaining strong ties with key international partners while strengthening its position in BRICS and African trade networks.
Crime and Safety: A Tougher Approach
Acknowledging the public outcry over rising crime rates, Ramaphosa emphasised a renewed focus on law enforcement. He announced increased funding for crime intelligence, improved policing strategies, and a stronger stance on gender-based violence. The expansion of community policing initiatives was also highlighted as a crucial step in restoring safety in South African communities.
Education and Youth Development
Ramaphosa addressed South Africa’s education sector, highlighting investments in early childhood development, digital learning, and vocational training. He stressed the importance of equipping young people with future-ready skills to drive economic growth and innovation.
Social Grants and Welfare Expansion
The president confirmed that social grants would be increased to keep up with inflation, benefiting millions of vulnerable South Africans. He also announced further investments in public healthcare infrastructure, aiming to improve accessibility and quality of care.
A Call for Unity
Ramaphosa closed his speech with a call for national unity, emphasising that while challenges remain, the country has made significant strides toward stability and growth. He urged South Africans to work together in building a stronger, more inclusive future.
