Ramaphosa Orders SIU Probe Into Carrim’s North West Deals
President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate multimillion-rand North West government contracts linked to businessman Suliman Carrim.
The investigation will focus on an R168 million commuter transport contract awarded to a joint venture between Transnat Coach Lines and Ziggy Investments, in which Carrim is a director.
The SIU will also examine the affairs of North West Transport Investment, which is currently under business rescue, as well as financial dealings involving the late taxi boss Jotham “King Mswazi” Msibi.
The investigation follows evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission, including a payment of R700,000 from Transnat Coach Lines to SANTACO. Carrim’s companies have previously secured more than R250 million in North West government work.
The SIU will investigate alleged improper conduct and any undue benefits. If wrongdoing is established, the unit could seek to recover state losses and pursue the forfeiture of assets.
Carrim is also facing criminal charges after repeatedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission, where his business dealings and alleged links to figures including Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala have come under scrutiny.
