Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The vigilant men and women in Blue arrested a male suspect (29) and confiscated R102 000 worth of dagga as it was being reportedly smuggled into the country from the Kingdom of Eswatini. This incident occurred as Police members were busy carrying out duties in line with Operation Safer Festive last night, Thursday 12 December 2024 along the N2 Road in Mahamba near Piet Retief when they spotted a truck that was parked next to the border of the Kingdom of eSwatini. According to the report, the astute members patiently waited to figure out what was actually taking place and it did not take long before the truck pulled off after having picked up a hitchhiker, and the members followed the truck. The truck was then directed to stop and a search began on the cargo. It was during this period when four massive bags of compressed dagga were discovered. The said dagga was wrapped with sello tapes and stashed in black refuse bags inside compartments of the truck. Subsequently the suspect was arrested and he is fingered in this incident. It is further suspected that he could have been en-route to a location in the KZN Province where the consignment was possibly going to be delivered. When weighed, the dagga was found to be about forty (40) kilograms hence the estimated street value of about R102,000-00. Meanwhile the suspect is expected to appear at the Mkhondo Magistrate’s Court today, Friday, 13 December 2024, facing charges in relation to dealing in dagga as well as for contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The investigators are working in collaboration with officials from the Department of Home Affairs. More charges could possibly be added as the investigation continues. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has been elated by the achievement made by the members. The General further emphasized to the public that the Police will continue to work tirelessly to combat cross-border crime as well as other forms of crime.
