EASTERN CAPE – Siphosethu Faliso (26), Masazindile Doza (31), Thozamile Malanti (38), Makwayandile Dyidyo (38) and Likhanyo Kwayibana (42) were successfully linked and charged for allegations of cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery, attempted murder, armed robbery, attempted CIT robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on 26 November 2024. The suspects were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in a joint effort with Cambridge SAPS Task Team and East London SAPS Task Team members on 2 July 2024. During their apprehension, they were caught in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Vincent in East London. The accused appeared before East London Magistrates Court on 4 July 2024. They were remanded in custody ever since their arrest. A few months later, the Gqeberha Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation ultimately charged the quintet in all three (3) different incidents that allegedly occurred in various areas of Gqeberha which was Chatty, New Brighton and Kwazakhele in June and July 2024 respectively. The first CIT incident occurred on 3 June 2024, it is alleged that IziCash Armed Vehicle (AV) was at Convenient Centre at New Brighton. Further allegations revealed that, while the AV was parked awaiting for the security guards from collecting cash, two vehicles with armed suspects opened fire at the security guards where one guard sustained bullet wounds. The victim was taken to hospital for medical treatment. During the incident, two firearms were reportedly robbed and undisclosed amount was taken. In Kwazakhele, an attempted CIT incident occurred on 19 June 20224, where it is also alleged that IziCash AV was at Quest service station in a parking area Salumntu street in Gqeberha. The security guard reportedly entered the shop to collect cash and a silver Isuzu double cab came from nowhere and opened fire at the cash vehicle, then the cash vehicle allegedly drove off from the scene. In that incident, two 9mm pistols were reportedly robbed from the security guards and no cash was taken. In another incident, it is alleged that on 1 July 2024 IziCash AV was at Booysen Park in Gqeberha in a parking lot where one security guard alighted to collect cash from the shop, a grey Ford Ranger together with Opel Mokka offloaded armed suspects that were reportedly fired shots at the cash vehicle. The security guards allegedly managed to get into their cash vehicle and fled the scene. No injuries were reported and no cash was taken. An intensive investigation by the Hawks led to the quintet to be linked and charged in all three (3) incidents that occurred in Gqeberha. The suspects were charged on 26 November 2024 and are expected to appear before East London Magistrates court on 6 December 2024 as all have been combined in order to centralise the cases. The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya has applauded the Hawk’s investigating team for successful linking the suspects with all three respective incidents, he said that will send a stern message to those that are involved in criminal activities in the province.
