PSL to observe moment of silence at all weekend matches for victims of femicide and violent killings
The Premier Soccer League has announced on Thursday that a moment of silence will be held at every Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship match starting tonight and throughout the weekend, as the country reels from a grim series of murders of women in Ekurhuleni and a wider crisis of femicide.
Police confirmed a ninth woman’s body was found Thursday in Dawn Park, Boksburg, bringing to nine the number of female victims discovered across the Ekurhuleni municipality east of Johannesburg since mid-July.
Several of the women were found naked or partly clothed. One identified victim, 38-year-old runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, disappeared while jogging and was later found dead.
The discoveries have sparked memorials, silent protests, and renewed national anger over violence against women. In a statement, the league said it was joining the nation in grief.
“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) joins the nation in mourning the victims of femicide and the recent spate of violent killings,” the PSL said.
“The PSL extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives during this difficult and painful time.
“We are deeply saddened by the violent crimes that have been reported in recent times, as well as those that may have gone unreported, and hopes that justice will be served.
“A moment of silence will be observed in their honour at all Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship starting tonight, and throughout the weekend.
“May their souls repose peacefully.”
Stadiums across the top two divisions are expected to fall silent before kick-off as players, officials and supporters mark the lives lost.
