PSL keeper reveals what went through his mind facing Messi’s final Argentina penalty

Kruger United and Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou has revealed what was going through his mind when he faced Lionel Messi’s final penalty for Argentina on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old started in goal for Benin in the historic clash at the Estadio Monumental, where Messi made his final appearance for the national team.

Dandjinou conceded three goals in the second half, with Nicolas Otamendi opening the scoring in the 48th minute before Nico Paz doubled Argentina’s lead on the hour mark.

Messi then stepped up from the penalty spot in the 71st minute and made no mistake, sending the ball into the top corner.

“At that moment, he was the only one I was facing. I wish it was not a penalty,” Dandjinou told FARPost.

The goalkeeper admitted he expected Messi to change his approach after missing a penalty at the World Cup.

“The last penalty at the World Cup he missed, so I thought he was going to change his target. But he didn’t change.”

Dandjinou believes Messi was determined to beat him after being denied on several occasions during the match.

“He went for the top corner with power because, in the game, I think I stopped him too much. I told myself I won’t give him the game. So, he made sure that he took a very good penalty,” added Dandjinou.

Dandjinou will now turn his attention back to the Betway Premiership, with Kruger United travelling to face Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium next Saturday.
