Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Disruptive actions were executed through Operation Shanela throughout the Northern Cape Province from Monday 24 March 2025 until Sunday, 30 March 2025. These actions resulted in the arrest of 244 suspects for an array of crimes, and several items such as alcohol, drugs, copper cable, and a suspected stolen vehicle were confiscated. Multiple actions, including stop and search actions, vehicle checkpoints, roadblocks, and high visibility patrols, were conducted across all five districts. Multiple suspects were apprehended for the commission of crimes, including dealing in drugs, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, and burglary. The arrests include the tracing and arrest of wanted suspects by detective teams. These offenders were nabbed during tracing operations for evading police. During these actions, a total of 8 527 individuals and 4 485 vehicles were stopped and searched. Additionally, compliance inspections were carried out at liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, and informal businesses, leading to the closure of 40 unlicensed liquor outlets and the confiscation of significant quantities of alcohol. Home brewed concoctions were also destroyed during these inspections. In addition to crime prevention actions, community awareness programmes, in collaboration with other relevant Government departments, were conducted to address emerging crime trends, share safety hints, and foster community engagement.
