Media Statement POLOKWANE – An alleged rape suspect, aged 36, who was arrested on Thursday 11 April 2024, appeared before Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday 12 April 2024. He was remanded in custody until Thursday, 18 April 2024 for formal a bail application. The suspect was arrested at Tswinga village, on Thursday, 11 April 2024. According to the information received, the victim went with her friends to the Prophet’s house in Tswinga village on Wednesday, 10 April 2024 until late hours of Thursday, 11 April 2024 as part of a social gathering initiative. The reports suggest that the victim requested to use the bathroom and was shown where to go. The Prophet allegedly followed her while at the bathroom and forced her to the main bedroom where he raped her. The following day, Thursday 11 April 2024, the victim reported the incident to the police. The police opened a case of rape. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the arrest and court appearance of the suspect. She further said that “Prophets are supposed to help people spiritually, not harm them; the perpetrator’s heinous act has to be dealt with harshly,” concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
