FREE STATE – A Hawks operation focusing on drug dealing and trafficking, has yielded positive results. On 11 and 12 December 2024, a team comprising of the Free State Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation from Bloemfontein, Welkom and Bethlehem, Sasolburg K9 Unit, and Sasolburg Crime Intelligence, pounced on and arrested six suspects aged between 24 and 46 for alleged dealing in drugs and drug trafficking. In April 2022, the Welkom based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team received information about three suspects distributing drugs around Fezile Dabi District but based in Parys. An enquiry was registered and a lengthy investigation began, where persons of interest were identified, their modus operandi determined, as well as identifying the types of narcotics being distributed. Measures to apply for and obtain permission to execute a police operation were put in place. In August 2023, the Director of Public Prosecutions granted permission. Subsequently, several transactions were carried out and different types of narcotics, including crystal meth, CAT, and mandrax were purchased from various targets during August and December 2023. The Parys Magistrates Court granted warrants of arrest as well as search and seizure warrants.
