POLOKWANE – The Polokwane VCIU (Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit) has managed to secure a sentencing of twelve years imprisonment against a 46-year-old male accused, Lesley Kau Ramphisa, handed down by the Groblersdal Regional Court on Thursday, 07 November 2024. The court heard that on 13 July 2017, the accused and his friend hitchhiked the victim’s vehicle when he was driving alone from Middleburg to Dennilton Tambo Square. When they reached Dennilton Thabakhubedu, the accused pointed the victim with a firearm. He then ordered him to stop the vehicle and move from the driver’s seat to the back seat. The other suspect drove the victim’s vehicle. The victim, who was in possession of his personal firearm, fired shots at the direction of the driver. He lost control of the vehicle and hit a bridge. The victim managed to alight from the vehicle, and the two suspects drove off. The victim reported the incident to the police. They traced the suspect and arrested him at the hospital, while the other suspect fled. He was never arrested. Police opened the case of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and the docket was transferred to VCIU in Polokwane. It was assigned to Warrant Officer Lucky Mathibe for further investigations. Through his meticulous investigations, the accused was sentenced to a direct 12 (twelve years) imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the investigating officer and all the participants for their tireless efforts resulting in the successful conviction of the suspect.
