WESTERN CAPE – The Western Cape police are making significant strides in combating crime, successfully detaining several suspects during well-coordinated operations targeting known offenders. On Friday, 7 March 2025, a multidisciplinary task team detained five suspects, aged between 30 and 35, on charges of murder and extortion. In an intelligence-driven operation on Wednesday, 19 March 2025, police apprehended four suspects between the ages of 25 and 43 in Durbanville and Mitchells Plain and confiscated more than R500 000 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of crime. The suspects face charges of murder and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. On Thursday, 20 March 2025, Provincial Organised Crime detectives achieved a major breakthrough following an extensive investigation. They detained a 39-year-old man for his involvement in the fraudulent issuing of firearm competency certificates. The suspect is linked to multiple case dockets across various areas, including Elsies River, Cape Town, Lansdowne (Western Cape), Tarkastad (Northern Cape), and Beacon Bay (Eastern Cape). The Anti-Gang Unit also conducted a tracing operation on Thursday, 20 March 2025, at a business premises in Malmesbury. While the person of interest was not present during the search, he voluntarily presented himself at the Bellville SAPS office on Friday, 21 March 2025. He faces charges of attempted murder in Bellville (January 2023) and murder in February 2022. During the same operation, officers detained a 50-year-old man at his residence in Margaret Street, Blackheath, in connection with the attempted murder in Bellville (January 2023). In Stellenbosch, police searched a residence in Kloof Street, Cloetesville, but did not locate the suspect. However, law enforcement officers made a breakthrough when they confronted the suspect at a farm in Kromme Rhee in Stellenbosch. The suspect is expected to appear in court on charges of attempted murder in Bellville (January 2023) and murder in Macassar (January 2023). The South African Police Service (SAPS) encourages community members to report criminal activities anonymously by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by using the MySAPS mobile application.
As our investigation into organised crime in the Province continues, we envisage that more suspects will be arrested and firearms will be confiscated in the days to come.
