Media Statement ZWELITSHA – A 37-year-old police Sergeant attached to Cape Town Tactical Response Team has been arrested following the robbery that occurred at Mthumbane Location under Port St Johns SAPS on Wednesday, 31 July 2024. According to reports, it is alleged that the Sergeant, who is deployed at Port St Johns, was involved in an armed robbery where he was assaulted by the victims at Mthumbane Location, Port St Johns. The information reveals that during the robbery, he was overpowered by the victims, and they managed to disarm him. They then alerted the police and handed over the firearm to the officials, and it was confiscated. The suspect is charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and robbery. However police investigation is underway. As soon as he recovers in his injuries, he will appear at Port St Johns Magistrate Court.
The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene condems the criminal activities and corruption within SAPS officials. “This arrest gives a clear signal that SAPS will not tolerate corruption by members whose mandate is to combat crime and protect all citizens”, she concluded.
