Police have arrested a 28-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman after an unlicensed firearm was allegedly discovered at their home in Thabong.

According to the Lejweleputswa Policespokesperson Sergent Palesa Thabana on Friday, 23 May 2025 members attached to the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit received intelligence driven information about a suspect allegedly selling an unlicensed firearm. Without any hesitation, members operationalised the information, and it led them to a house in Thabong.

The premises were tactically approached, and the duo was found inside the house. Permission to search the premises was granted. Upon searching the house police allegedly discovered one special revolver firearm and two live ammunitions. Both suspects were arrested after they failed to provide a license to possess a firearm. It is alleged that the male suspect attempted to bribe members in order to evade arrest.

The two suspects aged 28 and 21 were subsequently arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunitions. The 28-year-old male suspect will further be charged for bribery and contravention of the immigration act.

Police seized one special revolver firearm, two live ammunitions and R5000 cash.

Preliminary investigations were conducted and revealed that the firearm was allegedly stolen from the lawful owner during October 2024 in Odendaalsrus.

The two suspects will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday 26 May
