Media Statement GQEBERHA – Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the exceptional collaboration between SAPS Chatty, Bethelsdorp and the Anti-Gang Unit that led to the recovery of five firearms and the arrest of two suspects in a shack in Qunu informal settlement on Friday, 14 June 2024. It is alleged that at about 20:00, SAPS Chatty received information of a wanted attempted murder, theft and pointing of a firearm suspect and back up units were called in to assist. On arrival at the shack, a tactical approach was adopted and the shack surrounded. Two suspects, aged 27 and 37 years old were found in the shack. Five firearms (two revolvers, a baby browning and 2 9mm pistols) and over 127 rounds of various calibre ammunition were found inside. In addition to the firearms, Ant-Gang Unit members also confiscated 115 mandrax tablets found in the yard of a nearby shop. It is further alleged that the suspects are gang members. They 27-year-old suspect is detained on charges of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, possession of suspected stolen cellphone, possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition while the 37 year old suspect is charged with possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition. They will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court on Tuesday, 18 June 2024 on their respective charges.
Maj Gen Ncata stated that, “The recovery of these firearms is evident of the dedication and effectiveness of our members. Firearms in the wrong hands pose a significant danger to our communities thus contributing to violent crimes. It is imperative that we continue to intensify our efforts to confiscate illegal firearms and drugs in our quest to dismantle criminal activities.”
