The Gauteng Police Emergency Services confirmed the recovery of the body of a drowned man at Lakeview Dam in Lenasia South in Johannesburg.
Divers from the Westrand Water Policing and Diving Services were deployed to the scene on Friday at Lakeview Dam, opposite Daxina Hospital.
On arrival, members recovered the body of a 40-year-old male reported to be in a severe state of decomposition.
Police used an inflatable vessel to locate the victim before the body was handed over to members of Ennerdale SAPS at the scene.
An inquest docket has since been opened for further investigation.
Authorities are urging members of the public to take precautionary measures when entering dams, rivers and other water bodies.
Media Liaison Officer for Rapid Response Services in Gauteng, Raymond Sambo said precautionary measures remain critical to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
“Individuals venturing into dams, rivers or water for any activity are advised to do so only with a life jacket,” said Sambo.
“Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information to contact the relevant police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he said.
