Media Statement MTHATHA – Prompt response by Police in following up on information led to two suspects being fatally shot in a shootout with the police. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, 11 November 2024, on the N2 near the Mhlakulo Administrative area outside Tsolo. Members attached to Tactical Response Team (TRT) pounced on the robbers who were allegedly on a mission to commit cash-in-transit heist in the Eastern Cape. Police operationalised the information on the location of the suspects allegedly involved in cash-in-transit robberies in the province and KZN province who were on their way driving to Eastern Cape direction Mthatha. Members spotted the Polo Vivo on the N2 where it was intercepted. Upon stopping the suspects, the suspects started to shoot at the police and the police retaliated. During the shoot-out, two suspects were fatally shot on the scene. Upon searching, Police recovered two unlicensed firearms (a pistol and a revolver) in their possession. Cases of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition were opened for investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate will investigate the case of an Inquest.
